Coastal scientists estimate that oil companies have caused 40-60% of the coastal land loss Louisiana is experiencing. The current estimate to fix our coast and secure our communities is $100 billion, but taxpayers can’t and shouldn’t shoulder that burden alone.

Dear Sir,

I am writing because I believe Shell should play a part in the restoration of Louisiana’s wetlands.  The wetlands are vital to our safety, environment, and economy.  Unfortunately, they are rapidly turning to open water, harming our fisheries and water quality, and degrading one of our first lines of defense against storm surge.  Louisiana loses a football field worth of coastal wetlands every 45 minutes, while Shell rakes in $2.3 million in profit during the same amount of time.

The current estimate to fix Louisiana’s coast and secure our communities is $50 billion, but taxpayers can’t and shouldn’t shoulder that burden alone.  Coastal scientists estimate that oil companies have caused 40-60% of the coastal land loss Louisiana is experiencing.  Shell has played a major role in placing us in this precarious position, and should be a part of the financial solution.

In 2007, Royal Dutch Shell reported a net income of $31 billion, the largest figure ever for a British or Dutch company.  With such massive profits, Shell owes it to the Gulf region to help fund the restoration of the wetlands of Louisiana, and to fix the problem they helped to create.
