Prompted into action by our federal lawsuit, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council approved a rebuilding plan for red snapper in 2007 using the best available science. This plan includes measures to help end overfishing and reduce the accidental catch of red snapper. After being overfished for decades, red snapper populations are on the mend, but it is essential that fishery managers continue to follow-through on the implementation of the rebuilding plan to ensure a full recovery for this iconic Gulf species.
