Tell BP to Clean Up Their Mess

While BP's oil drilling disaster continues to wreak havoc on coastal communities and the environment, it seems the company may be more concerned with protecting their image than protecting the Gulf.

        -    Make impacted coastal communities whole again,
        -    Provide honest and fully transparent assessments of the disaster, and
        -    Pay for all impacts and clean-up without standing in the way of an effective response.

We all deserve more than PR spin. BP must fully clean up its mess in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP’s oil drilling disaster is wreaking havoc on the Gulf of Mexico, its environment, and its people. The lack of any sort of plan to deal with this catastrophe is appalling, and I am disappointed in your company’s response so far. I’m writing today with specific requests and recommendations for a better response to your catastrophe.

Fully pay for all clean-up and mitigation of impacts without hindering an effective response:

Your top priority must be immediate clean up and long-term mitigation without regard to cost or public image. Specifically, BP must reimburse all state and federal government expenditures for spill response; compensate the wide-range of legitimately impacted individuals; and pay for but never stand in the way of full implementation of legitimate responses, including full-scale skimming, booming, and other creative clean-up efforts.

Make the impacted communities of the Gulf Coast whole once again:

Along with destroying the environment, this spill is destroying people’s lives. It is your responsibility to make them whole. You can start by hiring locals to assist in skimming, boom deployment, and other efforts. Focus especially on local fishermen, shrimpers, and oystermen that you recently pushed into unemployment. Compensate impacted individuals and communities, including those whose lives are not directly linked to affected industries but are still feeling the fallout (e.g. marina owners, seafood restauranteurs, etc.). Finally, it’s essential to remain engaged for the long-haul to ensure that spill-related health impacts, from being exposed to toxins to eating contaminated seafood, are minimized.

Provide honest and fully transparent assessments of the disaster:

Immediately release ALL video footage of the spill site and allow access to a live stream, make public all air and water quality monitoring data collected by BP and your contractors, and allow access for independent third-parties to monitor the situation and conduct testing.

This is a human and environmental tragedy. It is your responsibility to mobilize every resource possible to fully clean up your mess.
