With the Army Corps’ MRGO restoration plan open for public comment this summer and the Congressional request for funding on the horizon, the community’s voice - your voice - is more important than ever.

MRGO isn’t gone yet. Send a message to the Army Corps and let them know that nothing less than a timely and carefully restored ecosystem is acceptable for our friends and families in New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish.

I’m writing in support of the MRGO Must Go Coalition’s project recommendations and implementation timeline for the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO) Ecosystem Restoration Plan, which can be found in the report, Mister Go Isn’t Gone Yet - http://www.MRGOmustGo.org/report.  Through channel construction and decades of improper maintenance by the Army Corps of Engineers, the MRGO adversely impacted over 600,000 acres of wetland and estuarine habitat surrounding the Greater New Orleans area.  The grave threat posed by the destruction of the area’s natural storm surge buffer is well-known by the communities still at-risk from the channel today.

The MRGO Must Go Coalition has gathered the expertise of scientists, local governments, and the community to develop eight priority projects for the MRGO Ecosystem Restoration Plan currently being crafted by the Army Corps of Engineers that will:

·        Mitigate many historical impacts of the MRGO channel;

·        Increase protection from hurricane winds, waves, or storm surge;

·        Improve fish and wildlife habitat;

·        Increase the resiliency of coastal wetlands to erosion, subsidence, and sea level rise; and

·        Create jobs

Please incorporate the eight project recommendations outlined in Mister Go Isn't Gone Yet into the final MRGO Ecosystem Restoration Plan.

I urge the Army Corps to meet the recommended 2014 deadline for construction completion of the MRGO restoration projects.  We need this restoration to be a top priority.  Without these wetlands, New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish communities continue to be extremely vulnerable to storm surge events.

Our safety cannot wait.
